Functional Fitness!

Looking to spice up your strength training routine? Take your conditioning and confidence to the next level with this high intensity class. Through the use of TRX suspension trainers, battle ropes, kettlebells, sandbags and bosu balls, in addition to other unique forms of functional training equipment, you will improve your fitness and technique. Get ready to master new exercises and unveil a whole new you! The Functional Training Bootcamp class is part of the ARC Group Fitness program and is included in the Aztec Recreation Center membership. This class is on Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:00pm, and requires a number that you may pick-up from the front desk 15 minutes prior to the beginning of class.

If you have been looking for a way to escape the monotony of the machines on the gym floor, are intrigued by the “cross-fit” style of training, or are simply looking for new ways to spice up your workout program, this class is ideal for you. Functional training bootcamp is a fantastic way to achieve a vigorous, total body workout. The implements used in the class will offer you exciting twists on tried and true exercises and give you the boost of motivation you have been looking for to re-commit to your fitness goals.

Functional training became popular in response to the demand for exercisers to increase their competence in both sport and activities of daily living. Many training styles today are too unidimensional and do not address the body as a whole. Exercises are focused on isolation of muscle groups and often the superficial “mirror muscles” are the only beneficiaries during the workout. Muscles were made to work collaboratively, not independently. A program that places too much emphasis on individual muscles will inevitably lead to imbalances, decreased performance and potentially chronic pain. Functional training delivers what its name alludes to…enhanced function! Isn’t it nice to know that the work you are putting into your training program is helping you to feel better and be more competent the rest of the day? The exercises performed are total body in nature and use fun and different implements like kettlebells, battle ropes, sandbags, suspension trainers, and a variety of balance equipment.

  1. I wonder if we have access to these equipment’s by ourselves in the morning, since I won’t be able to come to the class.

    • Hi Noah, some of the equipment used in functional training bootcamp is available in the ARC Fitness Room, but not all of it. Available: Bosu balls and TRX (borrow straps with your red ID at Membership desk). When you borrow TRX straps, there are two locations where you can attach them to bars: in the Group Fitness studio and in the Fitness Room, both on the Northeast wall.
      We are not planning to make kettle bells or battle ropes regularly available. These items, if attached or used incorectly, could create safety problems.

      • Makes sense. Can I ask you questions related to swimming or do I need to ask another party?

      • Thank you for your help Amy, i think i found the answer though, I was looking to take swimming lessons, yes! I don’t know how to swim 😦 but better late than never, right?
